Sawyer seeks to be a school which challenges all of its students to be successful, while nurturing them academically, civically and socially. We set high expectations for our children. We expect them to achieve and we reward them for doing so. We provide a challenging curriculum and maintain a rich and varied program of both curricular and extracurricular activities.
We believe in the importance of incorporating reading, writing, and oral communication into all of the content areas. We also believe in incorporating innovative techniques into our instructional program. We utilize cooperative learning as a major component in the academic process and emphasize hands-on instruction based on students' experiences, interests, and needs.
As a vital supplement to our solid foundation of basic skills, we advance a strong fine arts program, which stresses both visual and performing arts. We also stress the development of critical thinking and problem-solving skills. We focus on cultural enrichment, and teach our children to value and understand multiculturalism.
Our ultimate goal is to enable our students to acquire the skills which allow them to function successfully as individuals and as members of a group. We foster partnerships among all members of the school community, and strive to maintain a spirit of unity within the school. We also model and emphasize pride in our school by showing respect for children and adults alike.
Propelling all of our endeavors is our desire to make Sawyer an intellectually vibrant school, which engages the entire school community in order to enlighten the minds and spirits of our children, and to develop their academic potential.
